Space Habitats are Getting a Makeover
October 16, 2025
We’re excited to share that SAGA Space Architects has been featured in The Wall Street Journal article. The feature explores how the future of space living and working environments are shifting away from cramped “tin cans” toward comfortable, "cabin-like" habitats. This recognition highlights the growing importance of human-centered design in space exploration.
State of Space Habitats
For decades, space habitats have prioritized technical function over human experience. Today, that mindset is changing. Architects, engineers, and designers are collaborating to create habitats that are safer, lighter, and most importantly, designed for human well-being, just as said by our co-founder Sebastian: “Space will never be comparable to a five-star resort, but when you go, there needs to be a level of comfort, a level of safety and a level of stimulation.”

Working closely with the European Space Agency (ESA), we contribute our expertise to designing next-generation habitats that prioritize psychological comfort alongside technical functionality. As missions become longer and more ambitious, whether in low Earth orbit or in space, habitats must support not just survival, but also thriving in isolated and extreme environments.
Our Space Projects
Our LUNARK habitat was a pivotal pilot project, demonstrating that space habitat testing can be carried out successfully under extreme conditions, even by a small team. By gathering an abundance of data, we were able to set the base for many human well-being research projects among external researchers.

This year, we took another step forward with FLEXHab, a shipping-container-sized lunar habitat in Cologne, Germany, next to the LUNA facility. The interior design emphasizes sustainable and sensory-focused materials, including upcycled waste wood for some of the 3D-printed surfaces, cork-lined wall panels, and sound isolating sleeping pods with independent air filtration.
We can't wait to see what the future holds for the space projects but there are already some exciting projects at SAGA in the works!
